Beverly earned a B.S. in Biomedical Science and a Ph.D. in Genetics at Texas A&M University, where she fell in love with teaching. As a lecturer at the University of Texas from 2000 to 2015, she taught courses in Introductory Biology as well as Genetics. There she earned various teaching awards from both faculty and students, including the College of Natural Sciences Teaching Excellence Award and the Senate of College Councils' Professor of the Semester.
Although she very much enjoyed doing research in molecular genetics and marine mammal toxicology while at A&M, Beverly's appointment at UT was entirely for teaching. For fifteen years her full-time attention has been devoted to students, their successes and their struggles. Certainly she enjoys teaching at the college level. However, a good teacher who understands the material can tailor an explanation for students at any level. Furthermore, she has a long view of the knowledge, concepts, and skills that students need for later success in the sciences
My husband and I have twelve-year-old and nine-year-old boys, a dog, and a cat. When I'm not busy with their activities, I enjoy gardening and singing in our church choir
2017-2018 COURSES TAUGHT:
Middle School Level 1--General Science for Early MS. Recommended to 6th and 7th graders, General Science builds a foundation for later coursework by exploring the scientific method and measurements; properties of matter and of atoms; basic chemistry, including elements and compounds; energy, including its conservation, its forms, and its relationship to force and motion; and the special properties of water. Students will conduct laboratory investigations, write abstracts on science topics of their interest, and improve their problem-solving and note-taking skills.
Honors Biology for HS. Biology for 9th graders investigates interrelationships between living organisms and the world around them. Topics include biochemistry, cellular biology, genetics, biotechnology, natural selection, classification, anatomy and physiology, and ecology. Students will conduct laboratory investigations, write lab reports, and improve their problem-solving and note-taking skills.
